California Japantowns - Exploring the preservation of history, culture, and community...

Lodi

Within the 2 blocks of Lodi's Japantown, most of the historic buildings that served pre-WWII Nihonmachi remains. The town included 5 hotels or boarding houses, 6 restaurants, and various stores to serve the residents and influx of seasonal workers. Mike Smith, Civil Engineer, has restored the former Miyajima store and local community advocates are working to engage interest in revitalizing the Main Street. A Japantown mural by Tony Segale now graces the annex building of the Buddhist Church.
